Teams Vie for Bragging Rights
Sunrise Mountain High School, Las Vegas, NV
May 5, 2010 — Students in Tristan Hays business class have made their final presentations. These included market analysis, pricing projections and more for unique cookie flavors. Working with Jadon Foods, the students will now have a chance to see their efforts come to life. Their cookies will be manufactured and packaged for sale within the school for one week. The team with the most sales will be declared the overall winner.
From the first period, Team Sprinkles gave a good presentation. They proposed a chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich with candy or sprinkles garnishing the outer edge.
From the second period, Kasper Kookies edged out other well-conceived plans. Their ghostly cookies will be caramel flavored with white icing.
Both teams will sell their creations in the school cafeteria for one week. Proceeds from the sales will be used to fund class activities and trips.

Bringing Real World Experience to the Classroom

April 7, 2010 — Remember thinking you were never going to use the lessons you were learning in school? You often wondered why it was necessary and how if ever you were going to apply the newly learned principals. Business teacher, Tristan Hays, understands those feelings. His core curriculum is to teach his students how to run their own business. Each project throughout the school year has taught one fundamental lesson. From writing business plans to market research to pricing effectiveness, he looks to develop the skills the students will need one day when they seek entrepreneurship.
To reinforce the lessons of the year, Hays has teamed up with Jadon Foods in presenting one final project to the students. Each team will develop a unique cookie flavor, conduct market research and then price the cookies for sale to their peers. Each class period will have one team representative. The team selling the most cookies within the given time period will be declared the overall winner.
Jadon Foods will manufacture and package product for the students. As a follow up, they will provide cost of goods analysis so the students can compare their projections against actual costs. Income derived from cookie sales will be used by the class to fund trips and activities during the school year.
November 5, 2009 — Jane Lee from Jadon Foods has been asked to participate in a White House Initiative Community Conversation on Saturday, November 7th, at the East Las Vegas Community Center.
The information gleaned from these sessions will be recorded and collected and will serve as the foundation for the new presidential executive order that will govern the White House Initiative and will be signed by President Barack Obama.
November 2, 2009 — Jadon Foods was asked to participate in a Southern Nevada Hunger Symposium hosted by Three Square. The purpose of this event was to discuss "What is Possible: A Vision of a Food-Secure Southern Nevada."
Sponsored by the Harrah's Foundation and in partnership with the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the Symposium brought together national and local hunger-relief experts to examine the economic and social costs of hunger in Southern Nevada and how, together, we can develop and implement programs to deliver urgently needed aid.
Right now in Clark County:
- 210,000 men, women and children live in poverty
- 60,000 children in our community are food-insecure
- 49 million pounds of food are needed to feed all the hungry people in Southern Nevada
Three Square stands by the fundamental tenet that no one in our community should go hungry. Hunger is a solvable issue. By coming together through collaborations such as the Symposium, we can all be part of the solution and help narrow the hunger gap in our community.
